birds captivate me because they combine beauty, diversity, behavior, and accessibility in a way few other groups of animals do. with more than 10,000 species found across nearly every habitat on earth — from dense rainforests to city parks — birds offer endless opportunities for discovery. a birder can travel across continents to see rare species or simply step outside and observe fascinating wildlife in their own neighborhood. this accessibility makes birding both an everyday hobby and a lifelong pursuit of learning.

Spring migration was in full swing and we saw the earliest arrivals of orioles, whinchats and woodchat shrikes amongst others…. Songbirds galore!

They have two kinds of stork, and they kept the names simple - white storks are easily spotted but the black ones keep things a lot more private - I did see four of them soaring high above in the northern part of Andalusia.

I was obsessed with the flamingos and confess to being just a tiny itty bitty sad when I learned their Spanish diet doesn’t have enough krill / shrimp to make them bright pink!

But still nice to see them in Doñana national park.

bird behavior is another major source of fascination. birds migrate thousands of miles with remarkable precision, often returning to the same nesting sites each year. many species build intricate nests, perform complex mating displays, and communicate with a wide range of calls and songs. for me, learning to recognize these sounds and behaviors adds another dimension to the hobby, turning each outing into a puzzle to solve.
